In possibly one of the worst data breaches of all time a company called National Public Data lost 2.9 billion records including SSNs. Addresses can change but SSNs do not. This breach could cause harm for decades.

There needs to be consequences for data breaches.
It seems like there are big data breaches all the time and they seem to be getting worse. I personally think it should be illegal for a company to keep all this information on people without their consent. Or maybe there should be bad consequences for losing this kind of data so it’s no longer profitable to collect it and keep it.
I don’t know what the solution is but its very frustrating that people can go along minding their own business in life while companies suck up all their data. Then these companies nicely package it all together only to lose it. While the people who are the victims are helpless to stop it.
Sure you can op-out of some services but how can anyone possibly know of and opt-out of all of them? That’s why it should be opt-in only.
