Subnautica is one of my sons favorite games so when he heard Subnautica 2 had co-op he really wanted me to get it so we could play together. So I picked it up. The game is early access but so far it runs great!

First impressions
I have never played a Subnautica game before but I have seen them so I kind of knew what to expect. I think Subnautica has some unique game play. At least to me. I don’t know if any other 3D games that are mostly underwater and swimming. This game also seems to have its own story so I don’t feel lost. Of course I did have my son helping me but I would say this game can be played fine without playing the others.
Linux
The game runs out of the box on Linux and Steam. I did not have to do anything at all to make it work.
Graphics
I really like the way the game looks. I have caught myself a few times just staring at something because the game looks so nice. More proof that you don’t need ray tracing to have something that looks amazing.
Gameplay
I like the game play. Its a standard survival game but your under water. Once you learn a few key things like how to get water and food then its not to hard to manage. There is base building and thats fun but for me it is buggy. We have stuff we just can not delete no matter what we try. Maybe an update will fix that for us.
The game also has cool encounters. But unfortunately there is not much of a way to deal with them. The developers say they want no combat. In fact I hear they are telling their customers to “go play Sons of the Forest” if they don’t like it. That seems like an odd way to respond to me.

So you just have to run. I would like to at least see some form of crowd control. You can make a one time use flare but inventory space is small so it feels like a waste to carry it. I’m not even sure if that would work on a massive leviathan. I have not wanted to stop running to try it yet.
Open World
I heard from friends there is a point were the world stops and an early access or in development message comes up. I have not seen it yet so I think the world is a good size for now. Also for an early access game the world seems very polished.
Worth Getting?
I have been having fun and I think for $29.99 Subnautica 2 is well worth it. This is also only early access so more content should be coming. For me the only problems I seen so far is the buggy base building and no good ways to deal with a predator trying to kill you. But for the price I think you will get many hours out of the experience.

Useful Linux compatibility review. For Linux divers exploring Zezura, route planning gets easier with a coordinate map – I have been using Subnautica 2 Map for supply crate and resource pocket lookups: https://subnautica2map.com/
Thanks for the helpful link! I look forward to checking it out the next time I play Subnautica 2.
