A while back I wrote about how Linux is on the rise. Its been growing in gaming and otherwise because Windows 11 has had so many issues. Now it seems some people are paying attention. GOG has announced plans to support Linux going forward!
For a long time being a Linux gamer was a hard life. You had to tweak things and use wine to try to make stuff work. Then Valve came along with their incredible Proton layer and made Linux gaming more main stream. Thank God for Gabe Newell. Now GOG my other favorite platform is jumping on board Linux and I could not be more happy.
GOG Galaxy

News has been confirmed that a native Linux build of the GOG GALAXY client is in the works. Not only is this amazing for Linux but this is a massive win for for digital ownership.
Why it Matters
Not only are platforms like Windows becoming anti privacy and consumer but there is an erosion of ownership happening. Like how Sony decided not to sell physical disk anymore pushing everyone to their online store. And at the same time Sony is remove stuff you have already paid for. Steam is great but I feel like GOG is really fighting for us is this digital ownership battle.
Their entire brand is built on DRM-free gaming. They encourage you to download installers, back them up, and treat them as your own property. Bringing a native client to Linux means bringing that “true ownership” experience to the platform where privacy and control actually matter.
GOG Going All in on Linux?

We also can’t ignore that Michał Kiciński didn’t exactly hold back when he called Windows “poor-quality software”.
When you combine that level of bluntness with a strategic move toward Linux support it seems clear GOG has their sights on the Linux ecosystem.
The Verdict
With Valve paving the way through SteamOS and Proton and now GOG providing a native, DRM-free client the momentum is becoming impossible to ignore. I’m excited to see what happens! They really are Good Old Games.
